Road runners pound Hohola back streets

A smaller than usual group of POM Road Runners gathered at St Theresa’s Clinic, Hohola on Saturday for three events. While Geelong was pounding Port Adelaide in the Aussie Rules football grand final, the runners pounded the back streets of Hohola.
In the 1.55km sprint, interrupted by occasional hills and countless potholes, it was no surprise that Noko Negosa claimed victory in a fast time of five minutes 46 seconds.
Laurence Chandy tracked Milton Iakosi after the first lap then made his move mid-race to surge pass and win the 4.7km event comfortably in 16m 57s. Joe Kaikai was well ahead of Akis Ivia in second place.
Controversy surrounded Iakosi as he pulled out yet again of another event. Feigning injury, his commitment to road running has come under question.
In the long course event of the day, James Gurumi paced himself well to cross the finish line in 30m 37s to take out the 7.9km contest. Simon Pinampio, making a rare appearance, was close behind in second place, holding out his brother Swans.
This coming weekend will be start with events at Gabaka Street, Boroko at 5pm on Saturday with some runners backing up on Sunday morning for the Town-Airport Half Marathon.
Runners are required to assemble at Port Moresby Post Office for a 5am start.
