AND we wish you a jolly good morning on the day between Monday and Wednesday. For new readers of this august column – we don’t have much time for that day and have re-christened it Chooseday. That’s the one day when you get to do whatever you choose, without let or hindrance.
***
SO what wouldst? A spot of diving in the crystal blue of the Walindi waters, off the coast of West New Britain? Or sliding effortlessly through the rusted doors of once mighty vessels now scattered over the ocean floor like so many discarded toys?
***
PERHAPS caves are your secret hobby – if they are, there can be few more demanding or spectacular cave complexes than those that run for miles in the Southern Highlands province. Always wanted to see majestic fjords? An inexpensive few days at Tufi will surprise and delight even the most jaded traveler.
***
OR you could set Chooseday aside and train for your pilot’s licence. Surprise the family as you discard your frilly apron, let the dishes mount in the sink and toss your favourite wooden spoon in the rubbish bin – Mum can fly!
***
ON the other hand, these alternatives may be a tad strenuous for some of our older readers who are perfectly happy to curl up in a hammock between the palm trees with a book and a chilled bottle of some amber fluid or other. The picture is further enhanced by the splendid vision of the Other Half heading down the road with the intention of tearing up the turf at lawn bowls. Yes!
***
AIR Niugini has been apologising and asking for “the public’s understanding” for more years than we can remember. The fact is that the veteran PNG airline needs more aircraft, more money, less litigious staff and a public relations officers who excel at their trade.
***
THEY need to stop losing or misdirecting baggage, start serving the domestic network, keep to their own timetables and offer reduced overseas fares that aren’t hedged about with so many terms and conditions. The danger is that “our airline” becomes nothing more than a millstone around the nation’s neck.
