Address pay rates
I REFER to the letter “Raise public
servants pay and housing allowance” (Sept 26).
I agree with the writer’s views highlighting the need for the
Government to raise public servants’ salaries and housing
allowances.
There is definitely a great gap between a departmental head and
his/her deputy secretary from Executive 6 level to Grade 20
respectively.
How can one justify when it comes to do an acting appointment
and say for instance, a deputy secretary who is the next person
down the line, should automatically be the next person
considered for the acting appointment.
Instead, another candidate who is on Executive Level 4 from
another department or provincial administration is brought in to
act in the interim.
This is a total slap in the face for public servants, and
therefore to lessen that gap, the concerned authorities should
now look at ways to address the huge pay gap starting from the
deputy secretary level to the rest of the officers and the tea
boy/cleaner.
Added to that, I would like the Government to seriously consider
housing for public servants as soon as possible.
If that is a long-term arrangement, then can the responsible
authorities take actions on the need to increase the housing
allowance for all public servants?
The K7 housing subsidy is peanuts compared to the current market
rates.
It looks like most take-home pays for some of us go to our
rentals every fortnight and by the end of the pay week, we turn
to other avenues to borrow and keep us going for the next two
weeks.
This is a sign of the Government not looking after its public
servants.
I am sure we have some very committed public servants but the
above factors can be a hindrance to their performance, thus can
lead to lack of basic service delivery.
Please don’t blame public servants when services don’t reach
you.
