Police force is appalling

THE current state of the police force is appalling. The media is filled with reports of cases where the police are unable to control or investigate due to lack of manpower and resources.
The most recent ones were the looting in Mt Hagen, ethnic conflict at Erima and the criminal elements involved in the rugby grand final in Lae where an expatriate couple, who went to watch the game, was robbed of their digital camera, cash, car keys and other stuff.
How can we have a Government that is preaching about its economic success when the very basic social services are deteriorating?
Crime throughout PNG is a hindrance for tourists, investors and citizens alike. When will we be guaranteed security and safety?
People no longer have the trust and confidence in both the police force and the Government.
During the colonial days, the ratio of police to citizens was around one to 400. The population has increased tremendously, yet the police force has remained the same with a sickening state of deterioration.
I call upon Internal Security Minister Sani Rambi, Police Commissioner Gari Baki and the cabinet to come up with a policy framework to increase the police force.
