Ruing welcomes poll case dismissal

MEMBER for Dei and Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Puri Ruing has welcomed the dismissal of an election petition against him filed by runner-up candidate Roy Roltinga in the Court of Disputed Returns.
Following the dismissal of the petition on technical grounds, Mr Ruing said: “Justice has prevailed and he thanked God for the case being resolved quickly and did not have to go through a long and cumbersome process to reach a final decision.
“I thank God for the swift decision in the early stages of the whole court process and relieving me of the burden of spending time and resources that would have spent in the whole case.”
Mr Roltinga challenged Mr Ruing’s election victory in the last general election over claims of irregularities, particularly relating to a number of ballot boxes alleged not to have been counted.
However, National Court Judge Ambeng Kandakasi threw the petition out after Mr Roltinga failed to serve Mr Ruing the copy of the petition challenging his victory.
Mr Ruing said he would now concentrate on electoral duties and responsibilities including fulfilling his election promises.
