HIV/AIDS workshop underway

By ELIZABETH MIAE
PAPUA New Guinea will become the next “Africa” if nothing is done to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS.
Capt John Kerari of the Salvation Army said this yesterday during the launch of the week-long Adherence Support Programme workshop currently underway at the Anglicare Stop AIDS centre in Port Moresby.
He said the problems in communities were stigmatisation and discrimination which were discouraging people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) to interact with others.
The workshop is aimed at training participants to provide support for PLWHA to take anti retroviral (ARV) treatment drugs as well as to access other services provided.
Capt Kerari was among other representatives from Hope Worldwide and the World Health Organisation who funded the workshop.
The programme is a teaching method that engages community volunteers in assisting PLWHA.
Participants from Morata, Morobe block, Nine Mile, Eight Mile and the KC communities are taking part.
The workshop is the first of its kind which will also be held in Lae, Mt Hagen, Goroka and Buka.
