Load shedding to continue in Wewak

LOAD shedding or power rationing in Wewak, East Sepik province, will continue for another month while two more machines are being repaired, PNG Power deputy chief executive officer Lawrence Solomon said.
Mr Solomon said one of the four machines that failed at the Wewak power station earlier this month had been restored and was back on line. However, the generation capacity is not adequate to fully meet the demand for Wewak consumers.
He said out of the other three generators awaiting repair, one would be completely taken offline as it had suffered a major failure to critical engine components and will be replaced by a reconditioned unit.
Mr Solomon added that spare parts for the other two machines had arrived in Wewak and PNG Power workmen have already commenced work on the faults.
The maintenance work will be extensive and is estimated to take at least four weeks.
Wewak power station has a generation capacity of 5.3 megawatt, however, it currently can supply only 2.7MW, which cannot meet the Wewak consumer’s demand of 2.8MW daily.
PNG Power has therefore urged customers with standby generators to use them during this period until power supply returns to normal.
