Respect, value PNG currency, ENB people told

THE founder of Tolai shell money exchange has called on the people of East New Britain province to respect and value PNG currency as what they are doing to their traditional shell money.
The founder, Henry Kubak, said this after attending a workshop on bank note project in Kokopo last week.
He said people should respect and treasure PNG’s currency and handle it with care.
He was concerned as many of the K2 and K10 notes had worn out with most of the designs on them faded and were often refused by shop owners.
Mr Kubak said that he had also seen names written on the banknotes, which showed that people were no longer proud of the PNG legal currency.
“If we can respect our shell money (Tabu), why not do the same to our legal currency?” he asked.
He had learnt also from the workshop that people receiving money from customers such as trade store owners, shop assistants and bus drivers should not refuse to take the worn notes.
He said they should accept and take it to any commercial banks to exchange for new notes.
He believed the banks should go out to villages to educate people on what they should do and know about how to care for these notes.
Mr Kubak also called on the Bank of PNG to redesign the K1 coin as it looked similar to the 20 toea coin.
