FINSCHHAFEN MP Theo Zurenuoc has urged for the Finschaffen-Lae road to be properly constructed under a budgeted Public Investment Programme.
Mr Zurenuoc’s call follows his assessment of the flood and landslide disasters that struck the Burum/Kuat local level government (LLG) councils in the Finschhafen district last month.
Mr Zurenuoc told The National yesterday that the latest situation report of the Aug 9-11 disaster indicated that food security was a major concern for the population of about 23,000, because their food gardens had been affected by the flood.
He said basic infrastructure such as roads, bridges, footbridges and water supplies were badly affected and in a terrible state.
Mr Zurenuoc said from Pindiu station to Wagizaring health centre, there were more than 30 landslips and flood drains on various sections of the road, blocking vehicle accessibility to Pindiu station and other wards..
He said according to reports, some houses were destroyed at Huber, Burum and Kuat LLGs.
“Twelve bridges were lost including eight water supplies and the Mongi bridge linking Pindiu and Kotte LLGs,” Mr Zurenuoc said.
“With the destruction of the Mogi bridge, the people towards Pindiu in the and the Burum/Kuat LLG would miss out heavily on various services.”
He added that currently the airstrip was now the only transport link to Pindiu and Huber.
