United stand to win SP Goroka league
crown
By JAMES KILA
S.K. UNITED are champions
after walloping EDZ Cowboys 16-12 in the grand final of the SP
Goroka rugby league last Sunday.
United, mostly young men from Lopi and Sipiga situated within
the vicinity of the Sir Danny Leahy oval, meant business in the
opening minutes with good coordination of the halves lead by
captain and man-of-the match Nathan Hoyato to continuously
bombard the Cowboys territory.
United coach was a happy man after the game, stating most of the
boys were first-timers in the grand final but their strong
performances on Sunday was commendable.
“Except for Kusiri Sonyu, Henry Seka and Nathan Hoyato, most of
my boys are young and it was their first ever grand final
experience,
“I am very proud of their performance and we are looking forward
to the Coca Coca Ipatas Cup,” Walok said.
United backline was in outstanding with the wings Joshua Ben and
Seka and centres Kenneth David and Kevin Inagafa creating a lot
of headache for their Cowboys opponents.
United’s first try was a result of a good backline-halves
coordination which saw Hoyato making a dummy to set forward Jeff
David to score the try. Centre Inagafa made no mistake with the
boot to bring United to a 6-0 lead.
United used its backline well to create a good try to
inter-change hooker Tags Gaulim. Conversion by
United forwards who worked overtime to bombard the Cowboys
defence were Elison Rodney, Esla Soso, Jeff David and Siwi
Kawage.
They were supported well by young guns in the likes of Tags
Gaulim, Johnson Kembi, Johnny Amene and Lai Moses.
In the A-reserve grand final saw Nowek Royals coming from behind
to narrowly defeat SK United 6-5 and in the under 19 division
Tarangau upset Royals 5-0.
The SP Goroka rugby league also presented awards after the
finals to the outstanding players of the year, referees and club
officials.
