SAY it with words. GAND a very good morning to PNG readers; our
global audience must trim the greetings to suit local time.

SPY rang yet again today; this time there in great glee to tell
us of an advertisement on a Madang notice board. “For sale,” it read –
“a young cursowary…” What an achievement! We’ve always regarded
cassowaries as bad tempered arrangements; even their feathers have a
spikiness unknown in more domesticated birds.
***
BUT it would seem from the ad that the owner has succeeded in
producing a flightless bird with the attributes of a parrot or cockatoo,
a cassowary that will roundly swear and curse. We can picture it now –
Spy walks innocently past the cursowary’s enclosure and suddenly a
booming epithet bursts forth doubting his parentage … for anyone
interested, this unique creature is offered at K600.

OUR congratulations to FM100 senior reporter Ivan Bayagau, who
has been announced as the first winner of the prestigious Douglas Gabb
award. This award will see Mr Bayagau taking up an internship at Radio
Australia in Melbourne. It’s offered by the international broadcaster in
memory of pioneer RA PNG Service broadcaster Douglas (Baiom) Gabb,
originally from Madang.

DID you notice yesterday’s report about two prisoners receiving
intensive training with a Mt Hagen based mechanical workshop? The lads
will shortly know all about fixing engines and gear boxes and the gentle
art of welding. Which is great except that both are supposedly serving
life sentences at Baisu jail. So either life sentences have taken on a
whole new meaning, or prisoners are now free to undertake training
regardless of the seriousness of their crime.

SYDNEY University has just revealed the results of a survey that
examines Oz attitudes towards the USA. We have an uncomfortable feeling
that many questions, such as those asking for Aussie opinions of US
president Bush, may need to be substantially air-brushed before they
appear on television in the States.

MADANG’S Br Andrew Simpson, who is the PNGRFL judiciary chairman,
is a League fanatic, according to Spy. The academic vice-president of
DWU in the seaside town, Br Simpson reportedly supports Wests Tigers to
the death. Cheers!
