PNG portraying a negative image

I REFER to the letter “Humiliated by tribal fights” (Oct 1).
Living in Canada, I have to say that this person is 100% correct with the image PNG is portraying.
My partner has an exciting opportunity to work in PNG and as a result, we have been doing a lot of research.
The majority of our research was through the internet and I have to say the stories coming from your country are 98% negative, making our decision all the more difficult.
PNG looks absolutely stunning and this opportunity is extremely exciting, but if we are unable to move freely and safely to explore it, why should we consider the move?
We realise there are unsafe areas in any country, and we know how to be street-smart and avoid specific situations.
However, our research is leading us to believe that we would lose our freedom completely and that our stay could possibly resemble a jail sentence.
It is very sad that your country seems to be going out of control.
If the Government is serious to clean up the crime and grime, it would certainly do wonders for the country.
Our question is – how bad is it really?
The answer we get from those who have been to PNG is “it is dangerous, best if you take precautions”.
Dangerous is a word reserved for war zones – is this what your country has become?

Hoping to move to PNG
