40 complete paralegal training

By GABRIEL FITO
MORE than 40 resource owners from the Turubu local level government area in East Sepik province for the first time completed a week-long paralegal training at Cap village.
The training was conducted by lawyers James Nemo and Martin Garo from the Culture for Environment Law and Community Rights (CELCOR) Lawyers in Port Moresby.
CELCOR Lawyers is a law firm which has been instrumental in assisting non-governmental organisations throughout the country in educating resource owners on natural resources and management laws.
The week-long training, which had a participant each from Gawi and Wewak Island LLGs, was sponsored by the Australian government through its AusAID programme.
The participants were taken through a very intensive training on mining, construction, forestry, fisheries, land dispute settlements, Village Courts and LLG system.
The training that was initiated by the Turubu Eco Forestry Inc was aimed at creating awareness on the advantages and disadvantages of developing natural resources before developers go into their areas to commence work.
Director of Turubu Eco Forestry Inc Gabriel Mollok, speaking during the graduation, said the training brought a milestone achievement to the people of Turubu as they would now have basic knowledge of the law and make informed decisions on how they want their natural resources to be developed.
