Minister honours boxing promise

By HENRY MORABANG
SENIOR government minister has called on both PNG Sports Foundation and the PNG Sports Federation to come up with workable framework to provide incentives for its elite sportsman and sports women.
Forest Minister and Vanimo/Green MP Belden Namah made these comment while honouring his commitment to donate K10,000 to two boxing gold medal winners of the recent Apia South Pacific Games.
Namah presented K5,000 each to Jack Willie (48kg) and Francis Oaike (51kg) at a dinner hosted by PNG Amateur Boxing Union in Port Moresby on Tuesday night.
Namah also assumed the role as the new patron of the Team PNG (boxing) to the Beijing Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Chicago, USA and the next year’s Oceania Boxing Championships in Suva, Fiji, next March.
He assured PNGABU officials and boxers that he would support boxing activities both locally and internationally.
The Minister said he was happy with the excellent result produced by PNG boxers at Apia, adding that he hopes PNG will improve from there on.
He also said apart from his K10,000 contribution to the two boxers, he also made a commitment to secure K35,000 for the Team PNG to Chicago, USA, for the AIBA World Championships. PNG team leaves on Oct 18 for the Oct 23-Nov 3 championships.
Namah said two sports had put PNG on the world map - boxing and swimming.
