CIC: We don’t dictate or offer
coffee prices
By JAMES KILA
THE Coffee Industry
Corp (CIC) does not offer or dictate prices of coffee.
CIC chief executive Ricky Mitio was reacting to a statement by
Kwalam Ltd managing director Linda Girard who publicly said that
the CIC was offering coffee prices to growers and traders.
Ms Girard said the main objective of launching their company
Kwalam coffee export last Tuesday was to see farmers get access
to competitive prices “not offered by CIC”.
On this, Mr Mitio pointed out that CIC did not offer or dictate
coffee prices as Ms Girard had claimed.
“This role is left with the exporters and buyers who normally
negotiate among themselves as a normal business deal,” he said.
“CIC only facilitates the end process, making sure the buyers’
specifications in terms of quality and quantity were met by the
exporters,” Mr Mitio said.
He added the CIC commended the initiatives being taken by local
exporters.
Mr Mitio said Kwalam Ltd was not a licensed coffee exporter and
should refrain from making statements that would only create
confusion among coffee growers.
