DCI website to link Govt units, offices

By FRANK ASAELI
THE Papua New Guinea Government is targeting an integrated Government information system that would link all departments and agencies for better running of their affairs.
Commerce and Industry Minister Gabriel Kapris said this at the launching of the Department of Commerce and Industry’s (DCI) local area network and official website yesterday at the Lamana Hotel in Port Moresby.
The website can be accessed at www.dci.gov.pg .
Mr Kapris said the website would go a long way in enhancing effective communication and information-sharing between Government departments and agencies, private sector and others both here and overseas.
He said the Ministry of Commerce and Industry was a very large institutional framework which made it more appropriate for the DCI to establish the information and communication network.
Mr Kapris said with the network, ministerial agencies would be linked and better communication exchange would be achieved.
The ministry comprises the DCI, Investment Promotion Authority (IPA), Industrial Centre Development Corp (ICDC), Small Business Development Corp (SBDC), National Institute of Standards and Industrial Technology (NISIT) and so on.
Mr Kapris said the DCI was a very important department within the ministry responsible for the development and coordination of policies and programmes to guide and foster growth of commercial and industrial sectors in the country.
“Over the years the ministry had produced a number of industry policies achieve Government objectives for creating employment, generating income earning opportunities, development of export market and products,” he said.
It also seeks the transfer of ideas and technology to meet the challenge of expanding the economy by 5% to counter social growth rate.
The ministry had been streamlining its approach to effectively deliver services to the people in a manner that is most effective and sustainable.
Mr Kapris said information and communication technology (ICT) was the way forward for effective communication and coordination of programmes and activities in promoting and facilitating development-oriented commercial and industrial sectors.
