Rape a disease in PNG

I WRITE to express my disgust with the neverending occurrence of rape against our PNG women.
I fear for the female population of this country as we have been subjected to the real threat of rape everyday including in the sanctuary of our homes.
We are not safe anywhere anymore.
The question that always comes to mind is “why do our own PNG men rape their own country women without an inch of remorse and due consideration that they are committing a horrendous crime against their own womenfolk?”
There may be many underlying root causes of this evil behaviour including drugs, economic disparities, access to pornographic materials, poor upbringing, cultural shock and others.
Or are we breeding and raising an uncaring generation of youths? (The National editorial, Oct 1).
Or have PNG women been conditioned by culture and tradition to be subjects of men?
Whatever the reasons, these should not be any excuses for PNG men to rape their own womenfolk.
We may all be affected by some of these underlying issues, yet women do not go looking for men to be raped.
Rape is on the increase and PNG will have to admit that it is truly a shameful and contagious disease that needs to be addressed at the national level.
To the majority of good Papua New Guinean men out there, please help us fight this contagious disease for the sake of our mothers, wives, sisters and daughters and the good name of our country.
