Uphill battle for PNG: Bart

By PETER KORUGL
PAPUA New Guinea was fighting an uphill battle to get to be where it wants to be, the Deputy Opposition leader and MP for Lae Bart Philemon has said.
Mr Philemon said many leaders have good dreams but they were not able to translate these dreams because of corruption in government.
“Papua New Guinea is slipping slowly backwards and unless we fix the National Government, we won’t get any where,” Mr Philemon said.
He said the country could not continue to go that way when billions of kina invested on roads, bridges and other social services did not provide any tangible returns.
“Why are we having all the problems? Why are children dying and students dropping out of school every year?” Mr Philemon asked, when addressing the Lae District Planning and Budget Priority Committee on Monday.
He said the Government was responsible for everyone in PNG and the money that should be spent on improving their lives, were going missing.
“The leadership in this country is responsible for everyone in PNG. We are responsible for putting five million people on the poverty line,” Mr Philemon said.
