Justice Sevua to hear Wingti’s case today

By JOSHUA ARLO
NATIONAL Court judge Justice Mark Sevua is expected to hold a directions hearing for an election petition by former Western Highlands governor Paias Wingti today.
Mr Wingti filed the petition after the court granted his application for all the ballot boxes and votes cast for the Regional seat to be locked up for a recount.
He has named Governor-elect Tom Olga as one of the respondents.
Pending the hearing, Justice Sevua had also ordered the Electoral Commission to provide a list of serial number of all the Western Highlands Regional seat ballot papers issued during the polling period.
Yesterday, Justice Sevua fixed Oct 15 for a directions hearing for a petition against Deputy Prime Minister Dr Puka Temu’s win in Abau.
The petition was filed by candidate Kilroy Genia who subsequently applied for more time to serve the court documents to all the respondents.
Yesterday, the counsel for Mr Genia and second respondent, the Electoral Commission, appeared before Justice Sevua but Mr Temu’s lawyer was not present.
Justice Sevua also directed Mr Genia’s counsel to write to Dr Temu’s counsel to be present.
About 10 other election petitions unattended from last week after Justice Sevua stepped aside from his role as the elections petitions manager were also given new hearing dates.
