Milli: Report corrupt leaders

By ELIZABETH MIAE
THE Ombudsman Commission (OC) has appealed to public servants to report any corrupt practices by leaders if they are being intimidated.
A representative from the OC Victor Milli, who spoke to participants at the Office of Rural Development’s southern region workshop on the leadership code, said the code applied not only to leaders but also to public office holders.
When touching on public funds, he stressed that it was important that officers and leaders complied with procedures in getting the funds.
He said sometimes officers could be pressured to yield to their leader’s demands no matter how illegal it may be and called on every public servant and concerned citizens to make an effort to report such acts to the OC.
Meanwhile, chairman of the Central Supply Tender’s Board (CSTB) Brian Kimmins supported that call by stating that if there was continuous misuse of funds without following proper procedures, public servants would become the real losers.
The role of the provincial CSTB was also discussed where an officer from the Southern Highlands raised concerns about the manner in which the board awarded contracts.
In response, Mr Kimmins reminded all officers that it was the responsibility of the provincial CSTBs to report back and if they were in such a case as in the Southern Highlands, the minister’s advice would be sought to withdraw the powers of that provincial CSTB.
