EDUCATION officials in the Eastern Highlands province will be making
surprise visits to schools there to check on teachers’ performances and
absenteeism.
Provincial education adviser Conrad Esoke said any teacher absent from
school for three to four consecutive weeks would automatically be put
off the education payroll.
He said the visits would be used to check that school administrators and
teachers were implementing new initiatives and projects in schools.
“I will make sudden visits to schools to assess head teachers and
teachers’ progress on implementing new skills learnt from new
initiatives of organisations like the Unicef.”
Education authorities have started visiting Obura Wonenara, Okapa,
Kainantu, Henganofi, Ungai-Bena and Lufa districts to assess the
performances of school administrations and teachers.
Mr Esoke also applauded Unicef on its initiative to make schools in the
province become “child friendly schools”, through their various
programmes.
He urged school administrators, teachers, parents and other stakeholders
to take ownership of the new initiatives in their respective
institutions.
Unicef assisted through a workshop held on financial management for head
teachers, the establishment of child friendly schools, school based
counsellor training, sexual and reproductive training for teachers, set
up a girls club, essay and debate competitions, registrations of
students, teachers and families, the procurement of supplies to schools
and sanitation and water supply projects.
Unicef is also carrying out programmes in Simbu, Western Highlands,
Morobe, Madang and East Sepik provinces.
