PNG urged to be proud of its achievements

By CYRIL GARE
PRIME Minister Sir Michael Somare wants Papua New Guinea to be focused and be proud of its achievements 32 years on.
Sir Michael said “democracy was not our culture but we have proven that we can adapt a foreign culture and make it become our own over the last 32 years of self-determination”.
“One of our greatest achievements is that we’ve made democracy, another man’s culture become our own.
“Democracy is now too important for us, we can not afford to loose it now ...”, Sir Michael said this when addressing a military guard of honour and the people of Sepik who gathered at the Prince Charles Oval in Wewak on Independence Day.
He said despite the critics, PNG had proven wrong all those who underestimated and thought less of PNG to have come this far.
He urged all citizens to stand firm and be proud of their contributions to national development and continue to be focused on their dreams and development aspirations.
Sir Michael urged all Papua New Guineans to change their attitudes towards whiteman citing the example of Australia’s NRL games where TV viewers cheer for Australian stars and not their very own.
Sir Michael said he was proud to see young Sepiks tying the national and provincial flags to their bicycles during the procession, adding it is a positive sign of patriotism which must be encouraged at all levels.
