Cops looking into murder of golf club security boss

By SHEILA LASIBORI
SOME police officers have been deployed to the Port Moresby Golf Club since Wednesday after a senior security officer was shot dead by armed criminals.
The guard, who was from Simbu province and worked as supervisor, died instantly just after 3am last Wednesday when he was shot at close range in the back of his head.
Although it was not known how long the police officers would be stationed at the club, investigations were being made by the police homicide division.
Some staff at the club, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said security at the club’s premises and even on the golf course had been a concern after several people, including a department head carrying a firearm, were searched.
Meanwhile, club president Stan Walker yesterday described the murder as “senseless” and said they would work with the authorities to ensure the criminals were brought to justice.
“If the perpetrators think the club held cash in the amount of the kind advertised as the jackpot of the joker draw, they were even dumber than they have exhibited,” he said.
“The majority of transactions at the club are always done by either cheque or EFTPOS.”
Some staff believed the killing of the guard may be connected to differences between certain club workers.
They said the criminals reportedly numbering about 15, did not enter the administration office or clubhouse but went straight to the guard and shot him.
