NCD hosts soccer 7s tournament
By HENRY MORABANG
A TOTAL of 24 teams have
registered for the inaugural MRDC 7s soccer tournament which
will officially kick off today at Telikim Soccer Park in Port
Moresby.
The tournament promoter John
Kapi Natto said yesterday he was overwhelmed with the support he
received for the inaugural 7-a-side competition.
Participating teams include two from the Solomon Islands and two
from outside Port Moresby. They will be among the premier clubs
of Port Moresby contesting for the K20,000 prize money.
Natto said there will be six teams in one pool to make it more
competitive.
The teams confirmed are Hekari United, PRK Souths, Welgris
Higlander FC of Hagen, Madang Souths FC, Morobe Kumuls of Lae
and Inspac Rapatona FC of Port Moresby.
Other PMSA big names such as University Inter FC, Verave FC,
Defence FC, Momase FC, PS Rutzs FC, Cosmos FC and new comers to
premier grade Maclaren FC & Markam FC will also participate in
this tournament.
The PNGFA-sanctioned tournament will end tomorrow.
The out-of-town teams are Welgris Highlanders of Mount Hagen and
Souths Madang. Morobe Kumuls had not confirmed yesterday whether
they were participating.
Natto said he has adopted the concept from the Solomon Islands
and made some changes to suit the PNG needs.
MRDC through its subsidiaries have come again in sponsoring the
sevens tournament this year but this time not in rugby union but
now in the code of soccer which is a new concept that will be
demonstrated and played here in Port Moresby at the Telekom Park
this weekend.
