Even contest looms for Uni soccer
grand final
By ROBSON AKIS
THE soccer
fraternity at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) will be
treated to a feast of soccer when Sankamap and Wewak United lock
horns in the grand final decider tomorrow at the Toa 6 soccer
field at UPNG Campus.
Both Sankamap and Wewak United have been outstanding in their
performance throughout competition this year brushing aside all
their opponents in their wake for tomorrow’s grand showdown.
Sankamap in particular, in their maiden year of competition has
performed extremely well to wrap up the minor premiership at the
end of the normal competition rounds two weeks ago.
In the semi final knockout last weekend, the boys from the
Autonomous Region of Bougainville defeated Chauka 2-1 on
Saturday and went on to beat Avisat 1-0 in the preliminary final
on Sunday to earn the first grand final berth.
Wewak United on the other hand beat last year’s losing grand
finalist Morobe United with a 3-2 victory in the penalty
shootout last Saturday. They continued with the same form to
dampen the prospects of the reigning premiers Madang United
alias “Waratanget” by a similar scoreline (3-2) also in the
penalty shootout on Sunday.
For tomorrow’s showdown the boys from the ‘land of the rising
sun’ (Sankamap) will start as favourites as they have beaten the
boys from Wewak with a 1-0 victory in their only competition
round meeting and they will be aiming to repeat the same dosage
to complete the successful season with a premiership victory.
The game starts at 2pm and it will be officially kicked off by
the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ross Hynes.
