Vipers hunting for more funds

By DAVID KAPI
The Port Moresby Vipers sevens rugby league team’s participation in an overseas tournament is being hampered by financial constraints - the team needs urgent and plenty of money take part in the Orara Valley Sevens in New South Wales, Australia.
The last year’s trip to down south by the Vipers 17-man squad was entirely funded by the Port Moresby Rugby Football League, with the intention to market potential rugby league players to international competitions.
The Vipers Sevens team made the finals, but only just missed out in the quarter finals to the hosts Orara Valley side to make the cup final, where current Telikom PNG PM’s XIII squad members Larson Marabe, Gimapau Keimelo, Jersey Joe, and Charlie Wabo shone throughout the tournament.
POMRFL chairman Solomon Ravu said that negotiations were underway for sponsorship deal with relevant people, but further discussions would be deliberated on when the POMRFL board meets soon on the extensive rugby league promotional programme.
Ravu said that such event are crucial in developing our young players to gain experience and at the same time expose talents to scouts of the NRL clubs in Australia.
“POMRFL league will meet soon and let the outcome be known to the public,” said Ravu.
The Orara Valley Sevens are held in Coffs Harbour involving NRL feeder clubs and Pacific Island nations in January during the NRL off-seasons.
