OK Tedi Mining Ltd (OTML) has donated A$123,000 (K297,000) worth of microscopes to replace those that were about 22 years old at the University of Papua New Guinea Earth Sciences division.
OTML acting general manager David Masani said the company was pleased to contribute to the development of human resource in the country.
He said OTML had recognised UPNG Earth Sciences for grooming some of the best geologists who were now working in companies overseas.
UPNG Earth Sciences division heard Joseph Espi said OTML had helped the school in many ways – some of them were sponsorship of best earth sciences graduates, sponsorship of current students and acceptance of final year students into its graduate development scheme and also employment of geologists.
A total of 24 microscopes were presented to the school – 10 petrographic microscopes all with in-built reflected light setting and one with an attached camera and screen and 14 other stereo-zoom microscopes with side arms and built-in reflected light setting.
Mr Espi said the earth sciences students were appreciative and knew these microscopes would help them tremendously.
