More support urged for local volunteers

By ELIZABETH MIAE
MORE recognition and support must be given to work done by volunteers in delivering basic essential services to all communities in the rural and urban areas.
University and college graduates, who are still searching for employment, are encouraged to become volunteers to give something back to the community.
Board member of the National Volunteer Service (NVS) Board Council Bessie Kilavanwa said they needed university graduates to become volunteers and gain exposure in the field.
She said a lot of people look down on this service but they needed to recognise the skills and knowledge local volunteers had.
She made these remarks during the presentation of two sets of computers to NVS by the Australian High Commissioner Chris Moraitis last Friday.
Executive director Mark Mondia acknowledged the assistance by the Australian government and added that it was the first time for someone like Mr Moraitis to visit their office and participate in such a ceremony.
Mr Moraitis said they were delighted to work with a national organisation which recognised and focused on the importance of volunteers and volunteering.
