HALFWAY through the week already – but that doesn’t detract from our warm Wednesday greetings to our global audience. And because we know of two or three ladies-in-waiting, who are anxious to give birth to their impending offspring, may we wish you all a speedy delivery.
***
PARLIAMENT yesterday hosted a dramatic reinforcement of the contents of a petition presented to the House by Moresby South Member Dame Carol Kidu. More than 100 women dressed in black and wearing white ribbons sat in silence in the gallery, a striking indictment of the “people’s parliament” to address violence against women.
***
THE national concern was reflected in the many thousands of signatures on the petition, gathered in great haste in response to an initiative fronted by lawyer and fighter from women’s rights Winnie Kamit. Signatures flooded into the collection point from all parts of the country.
***
NOW we must wait and see the extent of the new Government’s commitment to devising ways to help solve this issue. Will there be funds allocated in the coming Budget for the creation of shelters for women and children? Or will the “support” of Parliament amount to a rehash of the usual hollow promises of a better deal for the silent half of our population?
***
WE’RE determined not to forget our many vintage film addicts; here’s a rundown on the current offerings. We turn the lens on EMTV – their Wednesday Night Movie series will showcase The Whole Nine Yards tonight at 9.30. The cast is headed by Bruce Willis and includes Rosetta Arquette and Matthew Perry.
***
BUT be aware that this is no witty exercise in sophisticated comedy; the flick is a broad farce with love him or hate him Bruce Willis recycling his now familiar rough guy act. It covers no new ground – but hey, it’s funny and has some talented celluloid players. Worth sampling.

WE’VE received a spectacular illustration of a griffin, alluded to in yesterday’s Column One. We’ll tell you about it tomorrow; in the meantime, further lore about the griffin will be welcomed. DeeNesenolios@hotmail.com is the e-mail address. And don’t forget our Quiz – check yesterday’s paper for details. Cheers!
