Burial appeal receives hearty response

By LUCY KAPI
THE director of Funeral Home has fulfilled his commitment to donate 24 small caskets to Friends Foundation yesterday to help with the burial of 39 infants still at the Port Moresby General Hospital morgue.
Ray Agonia’s donation was in response to a public appeal made by Friends Foundation manager Rory Sitapai last week for support in cash and kind to carry out the infants’ burial.
Mr Agonia had earlier pledged 20 caskets but donated four additional when he presented the caskets to Mr Sitapai yesterday at Funeral Home.
He said he was happy to help a worthy cause, adding that he started from a humble beginning and believed that he was blessed and should help those in need, especially marginalised parents who wished a decent burial for their infants.
Mr Agonia said instead of burning surplus left from making major caskets, his staff used them to make the smaller ones so they could donate them to the foundation.
Meanwhile, staff of Westpac Bank in downtown Port Moresby donated a cheque for K1,750.
So far generous individuals and corporate houses had donated a total of K5,250 in cash towards providing a decent burial for the 39 infants.
Mr Sitapai said hopefully they will bury the infants at the Nine Mile Cemetery next week after all burial procedures are being finalized this week.
He thanked all those who had the heart to support this worthy cause.
