Last Wiru man axed to death

By ANDREW ALPHONSE
A LAST WIRU man was axed to death allegedly by enemy tribesmen near the remote Williame village in Pangia, Southern Highlands province early Sunday morning.
A local youth leader, Mark Nape, from Yungili village, has identified the victim.
He believed the killing was related to a conflict between Wiliri-Koyarene and Waluapiri clans in the area that started two years ago and was still going on.
He said the victim was walking towards Wala village from Williame when seven men attacked him along the Wiru Loop Road.
The men shot him after which they chopped him with an axe.
Mr Nape said local Pangia leaders led by district affairs officer Nixon Kanema went to the police station to have the killers arrested but it was empty.
He said they had the names of the seven assailants.
When contacted by The National, acting provincial police commander Insp Benson Osil said he had not received any reports of the killing.
Calls to the Pangia police station also went unanswered.
