THE Division of Commerce and Industry in East Sepik province has for the
first time organised a workshop for its Business Development Officers (BDO)
in the province to discuss and iron out problems that are affecting them
in effectively executing their duties.
The workshop themed For Sustainable Project Implementation and Planning
started on Monday and will end on Friday.
Commerce and Industry acting senior provincial adviser Caspar Wrakonei
said the workshop recorded a history for the division as it was the
first time BDOs were drawn from all six districts of the province to a
roundtable talk on issues and ways they could foster development and
change in the division’s operations.
Mr Wrakonei said there had been no communication and consultation
between the district BDOs and the provincial headquarters staff for a
long time now and that the workshop would bridge the missing link
between the parties.
Deputy provincial administrator Elisabeth Kaprangi, who officially
opened the workshop at the Sepik Centre of Hope on Monday, described the
workshop as very unique and the kind that had never been organised by
anybody in recent years.
Mrs Kaprangi, who had also served the division for 13 years before
moving to administration, thanked the participants for working with
limited resource in promoting business activities for the last 33 years,
some of which were now flourishing.
Mrs Kaprangi cited the Sepik Savings and Loans Society and most recently
the Cooperative Societies, “which should bring immense economic benefit
to the people just like the benefits our fathers enjoyed some years
back”.
She urged all participants to participate meaningfully during the
week-long workshop and identify problem areas that could be documented
and presented to the provincial government for consideration and action.
The workshop will also feature presentations from stakeholders including
the three commercial banks and the president of the Sepik Chamber of
Commerce Leslie Wungen.
