POLICE officers in Eastern Highlands province have been told not to chew
betelnut (buai) while on duty.
On the same token, they were warned to avoid compromising their positions and
bring the integrity of the force into disrepute.
Eastern Highlands provincial police commander Supt Philip Solala issued the
warning last week while briefing his officers on the outcome of the police
election security operation debrief in Lae.
He said betelnut chewing was becoming a common occurrence among police officers
while on official duties and was contrary to good behavioural conduct expected
of professional police officers.
“We want to address common problems bringing the police force into disrepute one
at a time, this month, we are starting with banning betelnut chewing in offices,
vehicles and official residence (police barracks),” he said.
Supt Solala said they would address each issue separately to polish up the
performances of the police force in the province.
He said police officers must avoid taking sides with politicians and business
houses in the province, where police integrity was compromised.
“Any officers found to breach these directions would be dealt with and
disciplined accordingly,” Supt Solala said.
He said the performance of the force had been demoralised and weakened when
officers compromised their positions for vested interests and personal gains.
Supt Solala challenged every police officer to uphold the integrity of the
police force not only in Goroka but in the districts as well as including the
Watabung and Asaro police stations.
