Announcement by Olga welcomed

By JAMES APA GUMUNO
AN announcement by the Western Highlands Governor Tom Olga to allocate 10% of the total provincial government’s budget annually to churches was welcomed by the Western Highlands students attending University of Goroka.
A student, Ray Kimpuka, who claimed to represent other students, told The National that 10% was a lot of money and the provincial administration must be careful on how they hand out the money to church bodies.
Mr Kimpuka said money must be allocated to churches that were genuinely providing vital services like education, health and other services to the people.
He said the students welcomed the idea announced by Mr Olga last month in Baiyer River but added that there must be some strict control measures in place to make sure that money went to churches currently providing vital services to the people in urban and rural areas.
Mr Kimpuka claimed many pastors used the name of their churches to get aid for their own benefits.
He claimed such announcement made by Mr Olga would encourage people to build new churches in the province to qualify for the money.
Last month, Mr Olga said money would be given to churches, which were working closely with the Government, to deliver basic services like health and education to the people.
