Behave or else: Scholars told

By PETER KORUGL
ALL students under the Tertiary Education Study Assistance (TESA) Scheme would lose their scholarships next year if they participate in the current unrest at the University of Technology in Lae.
The Office of Higher Education (OHE) issued the warning in a letter to the Student Representative Council (SRC) yesterday.
“The Government expected the 1,200-plus TESA-holders to devote their time and effort primarily to academic pursuits,” OHE director-general Dr William Tagis said in the letter.
He said any TESA-holder found to be involved in the protests or activities to disrupt the university’s academic programme would not be considered for financial assistance next year.
“All TESA-holders must at all times, behave in a proper manner, abiding by the institutional regulations and aspiring to meet expectations of an academic environment, where there is order and respect for State and university authority, State and institution property, and, respect for individual rights and freedom provided under the Constitution of Papua New Guinea,” Dr Tagis said.
He added that the university’s governing council had responded to the SRC’s petition to reduce the increase in student fees next year to 5% from 20%, which was “fair and reasonable”.
“The Government expects all the students to accept the decision in a mature manner,” he said.
