Bulldogs reign supreme in Wau league

By SAMPSON BONAI
HIDDEN VALLEY Bulldogs sneaked home from behind to beat Country 22-20 to claim its maiden premiership title in the Wau rugby league grand final last Sunday.
Country led 16-12 and looked set to wrap up the title when the Dogs sneaked in from behind to score three late tries through centre Kenneth Konido and winger Philip Channei.
Channei raised the flags on two occasions to help the Dogs claim their maiden premiership flag that have evaded them in the past two years.
Elated Bulldogs club patron Rex Mauri who watched from the sidelined was in jubilation after the final hooter and thanked all the players for playing as a team to claim their first premiership title.
“It was one of the best grand final that was played in Wau for a long time and I want to thank and commend all the players and officials and all the supporters and sponsors for a successful season,” Mauri said.
Country player/coach Herman Yak blamed their loss in the cover defence when Dogs seized the opportunity to scramble home to score three quick tries in the final 15 minutes to wrap up the title.
“We had the premiership title on our sight and let the opportunity to slip under our figures and Dogs to sneak in from behind to beat us. I want to thank all my players and supporters for the great season this year,” Yak said.
Bulldogs shot to an early lead from a scrum pack 20 metres in front of Country’s try line through halfback Jorute Rodney and five-eight Justine Yak converted to take an early 6-0 lead.
