Appeal for peace in H’lands

MOST parts of the Highlands region of Papua New Guinea have been dubbed from time to time as “outlaw region” due to the chronic tribal fights and other notorious criminal activities.
The number of tribal fights has recently peaked to a scary stage. For instance, the persistent tribal wars in parts of Western Highlands and Enga provinces have dominated newspapers headlines periodically.
Vital services are disrupted and destroyed. Hence, development in these parts of the Highlands is minimal or none at all.
Schools, health centres, bridges and other infrastructure have become targets. Roadblocks, rapes, assaults, robberies and cold-blooded killings are prevalent.
Tribal leaders in the Highlands, particularly those tribes involved in tribal clashes, must be blamed for causing chaos.
These leaders are answerable to all the sufferings, destruction and turmoil. Most of these leaders make their decisions based on self-centredness, intolerance, vindictiveness, mercilessness and ruthlessness.
True leaders show the spirit of forgiveness, tolerance, peace, reconciliation and humility. These are the essence to a sound and peaceful society.
I appeal to every tribal leader, especially in the Highlands, to set aside their tribal differences, reconcile and let peace reins so that goods, services and development can be delivered.
