Respect women as equal
I AM shocked to learn that our women are being treated so inhumanly by their husbands. We are equal in every way. Women are just as important and valuable as men. It really saddens my heart to learn that such situations are occurring in our nation, a Christian nation. As Papua New Guineans, we must ask ourselves where the cultural and spiritual values we once upheld within our societies are. We need to strengthen our Melanesian way of lives again. I strongly condemn violence against women in our nation and at the same time, I also condemn violence against men by women within our nation. So let us learn to respect each other and treat each other as equally. – Rev Jack Moha, Bangalore, India

Revert to backlog clearance
I REFER to the report on cargo clearance in Lae port (Oct 9). Since the change in the Customs procedure requiring all cargoes to be cleared at the ship’s first landfall port, all the ongoing cargo for the coast now has to stop at Lae. This causes a lot of problems for us down the line, and obviously increases the problems of the port authority in Lae. Why not revert to the old system to clear the backlog? – Sister Joseph, Wewak GH

Go easy on PX staff
I TRAVEL to and within PNG frequently and I am affected by the constant delayed or cancelled flights. Often, I see many passengers losing their cool at airports when flights are cancelled or delayed. Expatriates, especially, seem to be louder and ruder than others. It is understandable that passengers get upset but what is not acceptable is to shout and harass the counter staff at the airports. They are doing the best they can. They do not own the company, sign the leases for new aircraft or set the schedules. Please be considerate to them – it’s not their fault the flight is cancelled. The Air Niugini staff are among the most polite I have encountered anywhere in the world. They deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. – Cas Vanderwoude, Auckland, New Zealand

Impressed with PX fares
I REFER to a letter by “Wally B” (Oct 8) who said PX online prices are A$1,000 more expensive than Airlines PNG. This comment is misleading. Airlines deliberately make a limited number of seats available at throwaway prices, as part of a marketing strategy and Airlines PNG is no exception. Air Niugini has excellent prices available online, you just have to be a little flexible when making your travel plans. I recently purchased Brisbane-Madang return online for just A$906, and remember, that includes the PNG internal sectors. Nothing wrong with that! – Raphael Maimos, Madang

Fears held for ‘future elites’
AFTER the headline (Oct 9) about the incident at the University of Technology, I now hold grave fear for the future of PNG. These are “adults” who, every now and then, call themselves the “future elites of the PNG society”. Are their actions we expect and accept from the leaders of tomorrow? – Concerned expat, Via email

Tired of low HDI ranking
WHEN comparing Human Development Indicators for 2006, PNG was ranked 139 out of 177 countries. This places PNG two ranks below Bangladesh (137) and one rank above Congo (140). Further, our combined primary, secondary, tertiary gross enrolment ratio is ranked 156, which is among the many poor African countries. The picture is the same when rankings for adult literacy and life expectancy are compared. The challenge now is to improve our placing because some of us are tired of seeing PNG at the bottom of HDI ranking. – Work smart, Via email

Agiru has great vision
SOUTHERN Highlands Governor Anderson Agiru’s financial commitment to fund K6 million and K4 million to upgrade both the Ialibu and Mendi secondary schools respectively is welcome news for everyone in both districts and province as a whole. Great vision comes from great leaders and Agiru shows that he is really concerned for the well-being of his people. – Steven Supi Palisa, Via email
