THE National Doctors Association has
thanked Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare and Treasurer Patrick Pruaitch
for initiating the public service housing programme.
NDA president Dr Kauve Pomat said public servants were the machinery for
implementing policy and development initiatives and a vibrant public
service goes a long way to accomplishing this.
Treasurer and Finance Minister Pruaitch announced that K10 million was
allocated for institutional housing, K15 million for housing development
and K15 million for urbanisation programme from the K1.637 Supplementary
Budget handed down on Tuesday.
Mr Pruaitch also announced the allocation of K10 million as back payment
for doctors’ salaries and wages.
Dr Pomat said the confidence level had unfortunately been low in recent
times and there had been poor inferences of poor performances.
“The reasons for these are multi-factor,” Dr Pomat said in a statement.
“It is important to note that the three basic necessities of life are
food, clothing and decent shelter. When these basics of life are met you
have an individual with a rested and a peaceful frame of mind and to get
you quality work output.
“It is gratifying to know that our Government recognises the importance
of these basics of life and also recognise the fact that public service
machinery needs to be working to implement the Government’s initiative
in developing the country,” Dr Pomat said.
He said having a public servant living in a decent home would go a long
way to improving their performance at the workplace.
“NDA also would like to thank the Somare Government for specifically
giving support to the doctors of this country in providing funding for
the National Doctors Housing programmes.”
Dr Pomat acknowledged Housing Minister Andrew Kumbakor, Treasurer
Pruaitch, National Planning and District Development Minister Paul
Tiensten and Public Service Minister Peter O’Neill for their efforts in
realising a very important programme.
