CAA to pay dues

THE Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) will start paying leave entitlements to more than 700 employees throughout the country next week.
It will pay 100 employees each week.
CAA director Joseph Kintau said the authority was using its own funds to “get rid of liabilities accrued over time” rather than wait for funding from the Government.
Mr Kintau met with a group of disgruntled employees based in Port Moresby on Monday on the entitlements and retrenchment payments.
The next day, he met with union representatives, including Charles Mandarip of the Public Employees Association.
It is understood that the CAA is unlikely to go ahead with the retrenchment proposed by the employees as it had recently carried out a similar exercise with 61 people.
They also discussed the staff structure as stated in the “2006 to 2008 and beyond corporate plan”.
On a complaint that the CAA was dealing with managers while the rest of the employees were handled by the Government, Mr Kintau said the former were contract officers.
He also said that the CAA could terminate the services of poor-performing managers but could not do the same with others.
