BEC approves ex gratia claims

By AUGUSTINE KINNA
THE Bougainville Executive Council (BEC) this week announced the approval of the settlement of an ex gratia claim by the Buin Freedom Fighters (BFF) over their engagement in the operation of the Tonu raid incident.
The decision was made by the BEC last Friday.
According to the Autonomous Bougainville Government President Joseph Kabui, the money is a token of appreciation for the death and injuries sustained by the BFF members during the operations and of the reimbursement for the expenses incurred by them.
“My government have been placed in a very difficult position in dealing with the claims lodged by the BFF and has authorised the Bougainville administration to source funding for this expenditure from within or outside the framework of the budget,” Mr Kabui said.
He said the Tonu operation had created a political controversy and suspicions on the involvement of the ABG and the Bougainville police service personnel.
Mr Kabui also revealed that the approval of the payment means that no claims of that nature by the BFF would be entertained by the BEC in future.
