Baki attends Pacific police chiefs conference in NZ

By SHEILA LASIBORI
POLICE Commissioner Gari Baki is currently attending the 36th Pacific Region Police Chiefs conference in Wellington, New Zealand.
The annual event is aimed at strengthening rapport and promoting greater ownership amongst South Pacific countries in preventing and eradicating crime.
The event being hosted by Niue but being staged in New Zealand is being attended by police chiefs from 18 countries including PNG.
“The objective of the conference is namely enhancing police professionalism, forging stronger regional co-operation in police work and promoting lasting friendship amongst the police service of the Pacific region,” Mr Baki said in a letter dated Sept 19 to Police Minister Sani Rambi before his departure last Saturday.
Mr Baki’s trip was provided for in the police budget at the cost of K26,000.
Executive officer to the commissioner of police Andrew Sterns confirmed Mr Baki was attending the meet, which started on Monday and will end today.
Pacnews on Tuesday published that tackling domestic violence and trans-national crime would be some of the issues discussed during the meet.
It reported the conference is being chaired by Niue police chief Ross Adern, who is a member of the NZ police, which is currently seconded to Niue.
Supt Tony Annandale, executive director to Pacific Islands Chief of Police (PICP) Secretariat, said the conference under them had three main strands - ethics/integrity, capacity building and regional co-operation.
Discussion items from the meet include recruiting, initial and advanced training issues, policies and procedures that support ethical behaviours, skills development and mentoring for member police services.
The chiefs, their delegates and regional partners would also be talking about domestic violence prevention programmes in the Pacific, drug trafficking, other trans-national crime issues and regional cooperation, Pacnews reported.
