Set up tougher laws: Activist

HUMAN rights activist Matilda Pilacapio has called on the Government and the National Executive Council to introduce tougher laws to deal with men who commit violence against women.
Ms Pilacapio said the current laws on domestic violence and other forms of violence against women were too lenient and often did not serve the purpose of justice.
“The violence we read about and which is happening around us everyday is unbecoming of PNG as a Christian country,” Ms Pilacapio said.
“This is not our PNG society and is untraditional what is happening to many of our women – young and old – today.”
Ms Pilacapio believed the concept of having “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth” could serve as real justice and urged the Government to seriously look at the laws and come up with tougher penalties.
