Leaders in Enga urged to stop payback killings

THE Enga provincial government, parliamentarians and community leaders have been urged to discourage their people from committing payback killings.
Enga provincial police commander Supt Teddy Tei, in a statement, said the province had been for the past years, regarded as hostile due to unethical acts of a few people.
“The attitude problem Enga has is the mentality of ‘payback killing’ which needed to be addressed by all the leaders and educated people of Enga.
“Educate the people and get this mentality off them and then Enga (people) will live a peaceful life in their communities.
“The mentality of passing on the history of relatives killed by enemy tribes, on to our children will do no good,” Mr Tei pointed out.
“Enga has no real crime problem compared to other provinces, but Engans have an attitude problem.
“Responsible educated elites and leaders must go down to the community level and discourage the people from having pay back killing mentality.
“I challenge the Enga leaders to take a personal interest in the law and order situation in the community by co-operating with the police to address any problems to make sure peace was restored.”
Mr Tei had acknowledged the Enga provincial government for its continued help to police during special police operations.
