Morobe 7s ready

By HAIVETA KIVIA
The Morobe Rugby Football Union (MRFU) 7s competition will be staged next weekend and will be supported by Papua New Guinea Rugby Football Union (PNGRFU) through its 7s major sponsor SP Brewery.
SP Brewery last month handed over K165,000 worth of sponsorship to PNGRFU and the national union in turn has committed K5,000 each to all its 13 affiliates to run their 7s competitions.
The MRFU competition, which will run for two weekends, will be used to select the Morobe 7s team for the PNG SP 7s championships to be held in Port Moresby at the end of next month.
MRFU president Darren Bishop said that the competition will be managed and run by the Morobe Rugby Referees Association (MORRA) at the request of MRFU president.
Bishop said he had asked National Rugby development officer Robin Tarere and MORRA to assist him run the competition because he needed a break.
He said he needed the assistance and break because he had run the MRFU 15s season single handedly and needed a break.
“I also had to ask Robin Tarere and MORRA to assist because they are the most organised group in the MRFU competition,” he said.
MORRA executives have obliged and will assist.
Tarere is now calling a meeting today at the SCRUM Oval for all club representatives to disseminate information regarding the 7s competition.
He said such information as team affiliations, player eligibility and other necessary information for the smooth running of the competition.
“This competition will only be open to clubs affiliated to MRFU,” said Tarere.
He said this is to comply with player insurance issues and cut out liability when inviting other clubs outside of the MRFU fold.
The clubs qualified and affiliated to MRFU are Consort Royals, Hornibrook Harlequins, Unitech Reds, Vikings, Lae Tech Rams, Greyhounds, Telikom Crows, Bismarck Maritime Pirates and Defence.
