Cricketers join anti-AIDS fight nationwide

By FREDAH TAIMBARI of NACS
ANOTHER sporting organisation has come on board to assist National AIDS Council Secretariat in its effort to combat the rising trend of the HIV-AIDS epidemic.
PNG Women’s Cricket Team (pictured above) apart from their plans to conduct cricket training sessions at some of the villages in Central province have also incorporated HIV advocacy their sessions.
“We are aware that women are mostly affected by HIV and AIDS. As a women’s team we want to educate other womenfolk, mainly those in the villages about the issue,” said team manageress Bernadette Clem yesterday.
The team manageress said the team will be targetting youth groups, women from other local cricket teams, and other women groups from Central province.
“The team is also looking at involving women cricketers who are not employed to be involved in HIV training, so they can also assist in getting the HIV message across to their families and communities,’’ Clem said.
National AIDS Council Secretariat has supported the initiative by providing T-shirts, and caps to be worn by the players during their training as well as provided information, education and communication (IEC) materials for their advocacy.
Meanwhile, PNG Men’s Cricket team, PNG Volleyball, PNG Hockey Teams, and other sporting organisations have also taken up the similar fight against HIV and AIDS.
