PNG needs multi-purpose venue for major fixtures

By DAVID KAPI
PAPUA New Guinea needs an international standard multi-purpose stadium to host sports that involve international teams.
PNGRFL administrator Jeff Wade made this statement in light of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup in Australia, from October to November, where PNGRFL is negotiating with Rugby League International Federation to host one pool match of PNG against one of its opponents in Port Moresby.
Wade said that a quality stadium will attract world class competition from international teams in different sports to give rise to standard of our sports men and women when they compete with best in business, but that will only be possible if we can provide world class sporting facilities such as a modern stadium.
He said right now we do not have stadium that can attract international teams here to play PNG or host one such event in any sport here and this must be rectified soon by the government and its stakeholders for the good of the nation.
ìThese are the opportunities to which good for economic gains are much higher in lucrative sports markets and thereby important to develop good sporting avenuesî said Wade.
However, Wade said that PNGRFL will still negotiate with RLIF to host a 2008 Rugby League World Cup pool match here in PNG.
Meanwhile, it is understood that today under direction from the NCD Governor Powes Parkop, a meeting between relevant stakeholders will take place to discuss upgrading of sports facilities in the city.
The meeting will be headed by PNGSF acting executive director John Kombuou, Department of Sports and Home Affairs and City Hall officers to address issues in providing better sporting avenues that is to international standard.
