Momase regional soccer championships underway in Madang

By HENRY MORABANG
MADANG premier sporting oval, Laiwaden, came alive as Momase Regional Soccer Club (MRSC) championship kicked off yesterday.
The regional soccer tournament attracted teams from Wau, Lae Football Association, Lahi, Madang, Wewak and Vanimo.
Tournament director and also acting president of Madang Soccer Association (MSA) John Giringo said last night from Madang that the competition went smoothly without any hiccups.
The surprise package of the tournament - two teams from Bogia - went down narrowly to well establish teams from Lahi and Madang. Mapex was unfortunate to go down to Mungkas of Lahi while Nodrops lost to Yabong Blues 2-0.
Giringo said he was happy to see the local teams from rural district such as Bogia holding teams from major centres with a small scoreline.
In the other menís soccer competition yesterday, Newtown of Madang beat Zairas of Wau 2-1, Marlins of Madang held Mungkas of Lahi to a one-all draw, HC West of LFA beat Zairas of Wau 3-0 and the clash of two Lae team, Poro of LFA and Unitech of Lahi ended up in a one-all draw.
There was only two womenís game played yesterday.
The little known United of Wau held the highly fancied Mopi team of LFA to a scoreless draw while Bara of LFA beat Newtown of Madang 2-0.
Giringo said the tournament started yesterday and will run through until the final on Sunday.
The winner of the championships will advance to the PNGFA National Club championships to determine who will qualify for the O-League tournament.
The winner of the O-League will represent Oceania region in the World Club championships.
