GG tells men: End shameful behaviour

GOVERNOR-General Sir Paulias Matane has called on all men throughout the country to “come to their senses” and put an end to violence against women.
He also urged women who had been victims of violence to step forward and talk openly about the issue.
Sir Paulias said men who committed violence against women and girls should be ashamed of themselves.
“I call on all men to come to their senses and do the right thing as protectors of women of PNG,” he said in a statement.
“I am not doing this only as a Head of State, but because I am one who respects women. I am going to support women and I think we men should be ashamed.”
Sir Paulias encouraged women to write about their experience on various forms of violence men commit against them.
He said women should not hide but speak up and “let the world know what your husband, male wantok or relatives are doing to you”.
He said men’s harsh treatment on women must stop to ensure a more peaceful society.
He also commended the efforts of Minister for Community Development Dame Carol Kidu and other women leaders for highlighting the issue in Parliament.
