ENB women calling for tougher penalties

By VERONICA MANUK
WOMEN in East New Britain are calling on the Government to enact tougher penalties for people inflicting violence against women and children.
East New Britain Council of Women president Mary Cornelius said the problem of violence had been ongoing but was not addressed until recently.
Ms Cornelius said women in the province support Community Development Minister Dame Carol Kidu’s initiative to petition the Parliament to look into the problem.
She said East New Britain was like other provinces where women and children were victims of rape, child abuse, incest, wife beating and other related violence, and it was about time men consider women as important in the society.
She said men should be proud that it was out of the women that men came to live on this planet.
Meanwhile, the ENBC is also assisting a non-governmental organisation, Dove Century Crises Centre, which deals with counselling the victims of violence.
Founder Elizabeth Konmil said the centre was established two years ago.
With the theme “real men care and lightens women’s burden with love” the centre is assisting three to four victims a day on councilling.
Ms Konmil said she supported the centre by selling ice block and meri blouses on the street to keep their programmes going.
She said it was timely that the Government should recognise such centres and support it.
